In
Matthew 27:5, the death of Judas Iscariot is referred to as self-induced
hanging or strangling (RSV): "And throwing down the pieces of
silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself."
In Acts 1:18, on the other hand, Judas is said to have died by a
kind of involuntary explosion of his body (RSV): "(Now this man
bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong
[NOTE: or swelling up] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels
gushed out."
If
one takes the Bible as literal, these two references to Judas' death
clearly seem to be contradictory.
