The thoughts that would become the
BHC
Primary Guideline came to me about twenty years or so ago while I was
watching an interview of Dr. Robert Lindsey on a Christian
television network. Dr. Lindsey was trying to explain his theory about
the dating of the Synoptic Gospels, but the host kept trying to make
what Dr. Lindsey's was saying support a doctrine that seemed to be very
important to him. The fact that Dr. Lindsey had been a speaker at one of
our conferences in
Arlington
,
Texas
was the reason that the interview first caught my attention.
It was clear that Dr. Lindsey understood what the
host was trying to do, but the host's doctrine simply couldn’t be
supported by Dr. Lindsay’s theory, so he patiently attempted to
correct the host. I don't remember Dr. Lindsey's exact words, but the
bottom line was that he told the host that he should also consider the
facts along with his beliefs.
Over the years I have been blessed to personally
communicate with many of the scholars who have made significant
contributions to the studies of the Jewish Jesus, Second Temple Judaism,
Early Christianity and the Noachide Movement. One thing I discovered is
that the personal beliefs systems of many of those I communicated with
affected them just as they control the lives of the leaders of religious
organizations: “Their work is guided by the goal of searching
for anything that will support their belief systems instead of using the
facts that they discover to mold and shape their belief systems.”
Five scholars, in particular, have demonstrated the
core ideas that make up the
BHC
Primary Guideline consistently in their work-- Dr. Ike Tennison
(president of
BHC
), Rabbi Jeffrey Leynor, Dr. David Flusser, Dr. Robert
Lindsey, and Dr. James Tabor.
An important part of
BHC
's mission is to provide as many facts as we are able to discover with
as many people as possible. One thing I have witnessed over the past 25
years is that when people become aware of facts that disagree with their
beliefs, they may try to ignore them, but facts won't simply disappear.
Those pesky little facts keep finding a way to pop up and remind them
that their beliefs may be wrong.
If you haven't already done so, I would like to
encourage you to incorporate the
BHC
Primary Guideline into your Belief System. We coined the name "Informed
Believers" for those who have made that commitment.
There are now Informed Believers who are also, Christians, Jews, the
"spiritual-but-not-religious," agnostics and atheists. That's
right, even atheists are believers; they believe that
there is no such thing as any god.
I would love to hear from you if you are
committed to the principles found in the
BHC
Primary Guideline. Let me know how it has affected your life
& how
BHC
can better assist you. I have been meeting with Dr. Ike Tennison &
Rabbi Jeffrey Leynor over the past few days and we are planning our
future
activities, meetings, research and publications. Your input is valuable
and will be greatly appreciated. Click
