My Dad
Ed was a man who loved his family, enjoyed his work, was faithful to
his church, and kept his word. He was born on September 13, 1913
and weighed 13 pounds. Needless to say, 13 was his lucky
number. He left us on September 19, 1999. In between those
dates he was graduated from Cleburne High School in 1932, married to
Gladys Ward in 1936, established Myers Plant Company in 1936, was a
radio operator in World Ward II, a faithful member of his church, and
father (four times).
Dad loved his plants and enjoyed every day of his work. At the height
of his career he operated seven greenhouses that were filled with the
most unusual and exotic plants that came to Cleburne, Texas from all
around the world. His return address included the line -
"Home for 50,000 rare and unusual plants." Schools and
colleges, including Texas A & M, came to his nursery on numerous
field trips to wander through Ed's garden.
Ed was always experimenting with his plants - cross pollinating,
grafting, etc. If you ever visit his greenhouse you will still
find a huge pecan tree that produces five different types of
pecans. He grafted them on to a native pecan tree in one of his
experiments. There is still a giant ivy plant in the greenhouse
that was planted in the same year that I was born - 1944.
In the final years of his life his eye sight grew dim, but at 80+
years of age, he went to his greenhouse office everyday and sat in his
chair so he could welcome every visitor. He always had time to
answer questions about plants and amazed many with his vast amount of
knowledge.
Dad was a very special guy and he continues to touch the lives of his
family and friends.
