The Evolution of the New Testament Canon

The first New Testament canon recorded was created by Marcion, a member of the church at Rome in 140 CE. There were a lot of "Christian" books (scrolls) in circulation but they were viewed as separate texts. The decision of which books would be included in the different New Testaments was made by local bishops until after 325 CE when the Roman Catholic Church emerged as a dominant power in the Roman Empire. The first New Testament with the same books as modern New Testaments was created by Athanasius in 367, over 340 years after Jesus.
